Popcorn for babies
Popcorn is light, irregular, easily inhaled, and it comes mixed with rock-hard unpopped kernels. It sits near the top of every choking-hazard list.
When can babies have popcorn?
Not before 4 years. Corn in other forms — a section of cob, sweetcorn kernels squashed, polenta — is fine from 6 months.
How do you serve popcorn to a baby?
The shape is what makes a food safe, and it changes as your baby’s grip and chewing change. Find your baby’s age band.
-
24 months+
From around 4 years, plain and lightly seasoned, with the child seated and supervised. Check for unpopped kernels.
Prep tip
If you want the crunch for a toddler, a corn cob section or a soft corn tortilla strip gives the corn flavour with none of the hazard.
Storage
Not relevant before 4 years.
Is popcorn a choking hazard for babies?
Popcorn combines several bad properties: the popped pieces are light and irregular enough to be inhaled rather than swallowed, the hulls can lodge in the airway, and unpopped and partially popped kernels are as hard as gravel. It does not soften with saliva. Both the AAP and the CDC list it among the foods to avoid for children under 4.
Whatever you serve, stay within arm’s reach, keep your baby upright in a supportive seat, and never let them eat in a moving car, buggy or carrier. Gagging is loud and normal. Choking is silent.
Is popcorn a common allergen?
Popcorn is not one of the nine most common food allergens. Any food can trigger a reaction, though, so offer it on its own the first time and watch for hives, vomiting, swelling or a change in breathing over the next two hours.
Is popcorn healthy for babies?
Popcorn is a wholegrain with reasonable fibre, which is why it is often recommended as a snack for older children and adults. None of that applies before 4, and there are dozens of foods that give the same nutrition without the risk.
| Fibre | Good source |
|---|---|
| Wholegrain | Yes |
| Sodium (commercial) | Often high |
| Iron per serving | ~0.3 mg |
Common questions about popcorn
Why is popcorn so dangerous?
It is light enough to be inhaled rather than swallowed, irregular enough to lodge, it does not dissolve, and there are always some hard unpopped kernels in the bowl. It appears repeatedly in choking-incident data for young children.
What age is popcorn safe?
Around 4 years in most guidance, and even then seated and supervised. Some sources say 5.
