Orange for babies

An orange served alongside an iron-rich meal does real nutritional work. The preparation is fiddlier than most fruit: membranes and pith need to come off.

When can babies have orange?

From around 6 months. Citrus was once delayed over acidity and allergy concerns; neither holds up, and the vitamin C is genuinely useful this early.

How do you serve orange to a baby?

The shape is what makes a food safe, and it changes as your baby’s grip and chewing change. Find your baby’s age band.

  1. 6–8 months

Peel, remove all pith, and carefully peel the membrane from each segment. Cut segments in half lengthways. Or squeeze a little juice over an iron-rich food rather than serving it as a drink.

  2. 9–11 months

Membrane-free segments cut into small pieces.

  3. 12–18 months

Segments with membrane removed, or supreme-cut pieces.

  4. 18–24 months

Segments as they come, supervised. Family portions.

Prep tip

A supreme cut — slicing each segment free of its membrane with a knife — takes two minutes and removes the whole problem. Do a few at once.

Storage

Whole oranges keep two weeks refrigerated. Prepared segments keep two days in a sealed container.

Is orange a choking hazard for babies?

Choking risk Moderate

The membrane around each segment is tough and stringy and can be difficult for a baby to break down — remove it, along with all pith and any seeds. Whole segments are round and worth cutting in half lengthways for the first year.

Whatever you serve, stay within arm’s reach, keep your baby upright in a supportive seat, and never let them eat in a moving car, buggy or carrier. Gagging is loud and normal. Choking is silent.

Is orange a common allergen?

Common allergen No

Citrus is not one of the nine common allergens. Its acidity frequently reddens the skin around a baby's mouth, which is irritation rather than allergy. A barrier cream before meals helps.

Is orange healthy for babies?

Orange is a reliable, cheap source of vitamin C, and vitamin C in the same meal can multiply how much non-heme iron a baby absorbs from beans, lentils or fortified cereal. That pairing is the practical reason to bother with the fiddly prep.

Common questions about orange

Can babies drink orange juice?

The AAP advises no fruit juice at all before 12 months, and no more than about 120 ml a day after. Whole orange gives the same vitamin C with fibre and without the sugar hit.

Does citrus cause nappy rash?

Acidic fruit can contribute to a sore bottom in some babies, mostly through the stool. If you see a pattern, reduce the amount rather than cutting it out — the vitamin C is worth keeping.
