Strawberry for babies

Strawberries carry more vitamin C by weight than oranges, which makes them a smart partner for any iron-rich meal. Whole ones are the wrong shape for a baby, so quarter them.

When can babies have strawberry?

From around 6 months. Berries were once on delay lists over allergy fears, and that advice has been withdrawn — there is no reason to hold strawberries back, and their vitamin C is genuinely useful this early.

How do you serve strawberry to a baby?

The shape is what makes a food safe, and it changes as your baby’s grip and chewing change. Find your baby’s age band.

  1. 6–8 months

Hull and quarter lengthways, or mash ripe strawberries into porridge or yogurt. A very ripe strawberry mashed with a fork is the easiest first version.

  2. 9–11 months

Quartered or halved for pincer practice, depending on size.

  3. 12–18 months

Halved. Whole small strawberries are still a hazard.

  4. 24 months+

Whole strawberries from around 4 years.

Prep tip

Ripeness matters more than size — a pale, firm strawberry stays firm however you cut it. Buy them in season and let them sit a day.

Storage

Do not wash until you serve them; wet berries mould within a day. Frozen strawberries mash beautifully into yogurt.

Is strawberry a choking hazard for babies?

Choking risk Moderate

A whole strawberry is firm, round-ish and airway-sized. Quarter them lengthways under about 12 months, and halve them until around 4 years. Very ripe strawberries mash easily and are safer than firm supermarket ones. The green top should come off.

Whatever you serve, stay within arm’s reach, keep your baby upright in a supportive seat, and never let them eat in a moving car, buggy or carrier. Gagging is loud and normal. Choking is silent.

Is strawberry a common allergen?

Common allergen No

Strawberries are not one of the nine common allergens. They are acidic enough to redden the skin around the mouth in many babies, which is contact irritation rather than allergy — a barrier cream before meals usually prevents it. Hives elsewhere, vomiting or swelling are different and need a doctor.

Is strawberry healthy for babies?

Weight for weight, strawberries carry more vitamin C than oranges. That matters practically: vitamin C in the same meal can multiply how much non-heme iron your baby absorbs from lentils, beans or fortified cereal. They also bring folate and manganese.

What strawberry brings
Vitamin C Very high
Manganese Good source
Folate Good source
Fibre Good source
Iron per serving ~0.2 mg

Common questions about strawberry

My baby got a red ring around their mouth after strawberries.

Almost always contact irritation from the acidity, not an allergy. Wipe the face with water afterwards and try a thin layer of barrier cream before meals. A rash that spreads beyond the contact area, or comes with vomiting or swelling, needs medical advice.

When can my child have whole strawberries?

Around 4 years. Quarter them under 12 months, halve them after that. Small whole strawberries are the same hazard class as grapes.
