Clementine for babies

Clementines and mandarins are the practical citrus for a baby: thin skin, easy segments, usually seedless. The membrane still has to come off.

When can babies have clementine?

From around 6 months, peeled, membrane removed and segments halved.

How do you serve clementine to a baby?

The shape is what makes a food safe, and it changes as your baby’s grip and chewing change. Find your baby’s age band.

  1. 6–8 months

Peel, remove the membrane from each segment, and cut segments in half lengthways.

  2. 9–11 months

Halved segments for the pincer grasp.

  3. 12–18 months

    Whole segments with membrane removed.

  4. 18–24 months

    Segments as they come, supervised.

Prep tip

Warm the clementine briefly in your hands before peeling — the membrane comes away far more easily from a warm segment.

Storage

Keep at room temperature for a few days or refrigerate for two weeks. Peel just before serving.

Is clementine a choking hazard for babies?

Choking risk Moderate

A whole segment is round and firm-skinned enough to be worth halving lengthways under 12 months. Remove the membrane, which is stringy, and check carefully for seeds — 'seedless' varieties are not always.

Whatever you serve, stay within arm’s reach, keep your baby upright in a supportive seat, and never let them eat in a moving car, buggy or carrier. Gagging is loud and normal. Choking is silent.

Is clementine a common allergen?

Common allergen No

Clementine is not one of the nine most common food allergens. Any food can trigger a reaction, though, so offer it on its own the first time and watch for hives, vomiting, swelling or a change in breathing over the next two hours.

Is clementine healthy for babies?

The same vitamin C benefit as orange, in a package that takes half the time to prepare. Pair with an iron-rich meal for the absorption benefit.

What clementine brings
Vitamin C Very high
Folate Good source
Vitamin A Some
Fibre Good source
Iron per serving ~0.1 mg

Common questions about clementine

Do I really need to remove the membrane?

Under about 12 months, yes. It is tough and stringy and a baby without molars cannot break it down. After that it is a preference rather than a safety issue.

Are clementines, mandarins and satsumas different?

Slightly different varieties, functionally identical for this purpose. Satsumas are usually the easiest to peel and most reliably seedless.
