Fruit
Grapefruit for babies
Grapefruit is a strong vitamin C source with two considerations: it is very acidic, and it interacts with a number of medications in a way other citrus does not.
When can babies have grapefruit?
From around 6 months, membrane removed and cut small. Pink and red grapefruit are sweeter and higher in vitamin A than white.
How do you serve grapefruit to a baby?
The shape is what makes a food safe, and it changes as your baby’s grip and chewing change. Find your baby’s age band.
-
6–8 months
Peel, remove pith and membrane from each segment, and cut into small pieces. Barrier cream on the face first.
-
9–11 months
Small membrane-free pieces.
-
12–18 months
Segments cut into pieces, or supremed.
-
18–24 months
Segments, or scooped from the half with a spoon.
Prep tip
Pink and red grapefruit are noticeably sweeter than white. If your baby rejects grapefruit, it may be the variety rather than the fruit.
Storage
Whole grapefruit keeps two to three weeks refrigerated. Prepared segments keep two days.
Is grapefruit a choking hazard for babies?
The membrane between segments is tough and stringy and must be removed. Segments are large and should be cut into smaller pieces. Remove all pith and seeds.
Whatever you serve, stay within arm’s reach, keep your baby upright in a supportive seat, and never let them eat in a moving car, buggy or carrier. Gagging is loud and normal. Choking is silent.
Is grapefruit a common allergen?
Grapefruit is not an allergen, but it inhibits an enzyme in the gut that metabolises many medications, which can raise drug levels in the blood. If your child takes any regular medication, check with your pharmacist before making grapefruit a routine food.
Is grapefruit healthy for babies?
Very high vitamin C, which supports iron absorption from plant foods in the same meal. Pink varieties add lycopene and vitamin A. Its sharpness means many babies reject it, and that is fine — orange and kiwi do the same job more palatably.
| Vitamin C | Very high |
|---|---|
| Vitamin A (pink) | Good source |
| Fibre | Good source |
| Potassium | Good source |
| Iron per serving | ~0.1 mg |
Common questions about grapefruit
Does the grapefruit drug interaction apply to children?
Yes — the mechanism is the same at any age. It affects a long list of medications. If your child takes anything regularly, ask your pharmacist before making grapefruit a daily food.
Is grapefruit too sour for a baby?
Many babies reject it, which is fine. Pink varieties are sweeter. Orange, clementine and kiwi provide the same vitamin C more easily.
