Watermelon for babies
Watermelon is mostly water and mostly welcome. Cut it into spears rather than chunks and remove the seeds.
When can babies have watermelon?
From around 6 months, deseeded and cut into spears. Watermelon is useful in hot weather and for teething babies who want something cold to gnaw.
How do you serve watermelon to a baby?
The shape is what makes a food safe, and it changes as your baby’s grip and chewing change. Find your baby’s age band.
-
6–8 months
Cut into long spears about the width of two adult fingers, seeds removed, rind off. Chilled spears are good for sore gums.
-
9–11 months
Smaller pieces for the pincer grasp, still deseeded.
-
12–18 months
Cubes or spears. Watch for stuffing — it goes down fast.
-
18–24 months
Slices and chunks. Family portions.
Prep tip
Freeze watermelon spears for teething. They soften as they thaw and are much easier to hold than an ice cube.
Storage
Cut watermelon keeps three to four days refrigerated in a sealed container. It absorbs fridge smells quickly.
Is watermelon a choking hazard for babies?
Watermelon is soft but slippery, and a chunk can slide back in the mouth before a baby has processed it. Serve as long spears rather than cubes in the first year. Remove black seeds; the pale immature seeds are harmless. The rind is too firm to chew and should not be given.
Whatever you serve, stay within arm’s reach, keep your baby upright in a supportive seat, and never let them eat in a moving car, buggy or carrier. Gagging is loud and normal. Choking is silent.
Is watermelon a common allergen?
Watermelon is not one of the nine most common food allergens. Any food can trigger a reaction, though, so offer it on its own the first time and watch for hives, vomiting, swelling or a change in breathing over the next two hours.
Is watermelon healthy for babies?
Around 92% water, so watermelon is genuinely hydrating — worth knowing in summer, when babies still get most of their fluid from milk. It also carries lycopene and a modest amount of vitamin C and A.
| Water | Very high |
|---|---|
| Vitamin C | Good source |
| Vitamin A | Good source |
| Lycopene | High |
| Iron per serving | ~0.2 mg |
Common questions about watermelon
Are watermelon seeds dangerous?
The hard black ones are worth removing for a baby — they are small, smooth and can be inhaled. The soft white immature seeds are harmless.
Can watermelon cause diarrhoea?
A lot of it can loosen stools simply because of the water and sugar volume. Moderate the amount rather than avoiding it.
