Cucumber for babies
A chilled cucumber spear is one of the best things you can hand a teething baby. Just never cut it into coins, and peel it while they are small.
When can babies have cucumber?
From around 6 months, peeled and cut into long spears. Raw is fine here — unlike carrot, cucumber is soft enough that raw does not create the same risk, provided the shape is right.
How do you serve cucumber to a baby?
The shape is what makes a food safe, and it changes as your baby’s grip and chewing change. Find your baby’s age band.
-
6–8 months
Peel and cut into long spears about the length of an adult finger. Chill in the fridge — cold is what makes it useful for teething. Supervise closely, as with any raw food.
-
9–11 months
Peeled spears, or small peeled pieces for the pincer grasp. Not coins.
-
12–18 months
Spears with the skin on if your child chews well, or thin batons. Still not coins.
-
24 months+
Any shape from around 4 years, when the hazard from round pieces drops away.
Prep tip
Chill the spears well. A cold cucumber spear is one of the few teething aids that is also food.
Storage
Keeps about a week in the fridge. Cut cucumber goes soggy within a day — cut what you need.
Is cucumber a choking hazard for babies?
Cucumber coins are a hazard: firm, round and the wrong diameter. Always cut lengthways into spears. The skin is tough and slippery and can peel away in a strip in the mouth — peel it until around 9–12 months. Seeded centres of large cucumbers are watery and fine.
Whatever you serve, stay within arm’s reach, keep your baby upright in a supportive seat, and never let them eat in a moving car, buggy or carrier. Gagging is loud and normal. Choking is silent.
Is cucumber a common allergen?
Cucumber is not one of the nine most common food allergens. Any food can trigger a reaction, though, so offer it on its own the first time and watch for hives, vomiting, swelling or a change in breathing over the next two hours.
Is cucumber healthy for babies?
Cucumber is mostly water, so it is not a nutritional heavyweight, but it is genuinely useful: chilled spears soothe sore gums during teething, and it introduces a fresh, non-sweet flavour early. Think of it as hydration and sensory practice rather than nutrition.

Common questions about cucumber
Can babies eat cucumber skin?
From around 9–12 months, when they are chewing confidently. Before that, peel it — the skin is tough and can slide off in a strip in the mouth.
Is raw cucumber safe when raw carrot is not?
Yes, and the difference is hardness. Cucumber gives under pressure; raw carrot does not. Shape still matters for both — spears, never coins.
