Vegetable
Celery for babies
Celery is a genuine choking hazard raw because of its long fibres, which do not break down. Cooked and finely chopped, it is a useful flavour base.
When can babies have celery?
Cooked and finely chopped from around 6 months. Raw sticks from around 4 years.
How do you serve celery to a baby?
The shape is what makes a food safe, and it changes as your baby’s grip and chewing change. Find your baby’s age band.
-
6–8 months
Finely chopped and softened with onion and carrot as the base of a soup, stew or sauce. Not as a finger food.
-
9–11 months
Finely chopped cooked celery in mixed dishes.
-
12–18 months
Cooked celery in soups and stews. Raw is still not appropriate.
-
24 months+
Raw celery sticks from around 4 years, with the strings peeled off.
Prep tip
Peel the outer strings off with a vegetable peeler even when cooking. They stay tough through long simmering.
Storage
Keeps two weeks refrigerated wrapped in foil, which holds it crisp far better than a plastic bag.
Is celery a choking hazard for babies?
Raw celery is on the standard choking-hazard lists. Its long, tough strings do not break apart when chewed and can wrap and lodge. Raw celery sticks should wait until around 4 years, and even then the strings are worth peeling off. Cooked and finely chopped celery is fine from 6 months.
Whatever you serve, stay within arm’s reach, keep your baby upright in a supportive seat, and never let them eat in a moving car, buggy or carrier. Gagging is loud and normal. Choking is silent.
Is celery a common allergen?
Celery is not on the US top-nine list but it is one of the 14 allergens that must be declared on food labels in the EU and UK, where celery allergy is more commonly reported. Introduce it on its own and watch as you would any allergen if you are in Europe.
Is celery healthy for babies?
Nutritionally light — mostly water, with useful vitamin K. Its role in infant feeding is as part of the soffritto base with onion and carrot, where it builds flavour into soups, stews and sauces without any salt.
| Vitamin K | High |

Common questions about celery
Why is raw celery a choking hazard?
Its long fibres do not break when chewed. A piece can be bitten off but stay intact as a string, which can lodge. It appears on CDC and AAP hazard lists for exactly this reason.
Can babies have celery in soup?
Yes, finely chopped and cooked soft. That is the right way to serve it under 4.
