Vegetable
Leek for babies
Leek is onion's gentler relative. Cooked slowly it goes silky and sweet, and it is one of the easiest ways to build flavour into a baby's food.
When can babies have leek?
From around 6 months, finely sliced and cooked soft.
How do you serve leek to a baby?
The shape is what makes a food safe, and it changes as your baby’s grip and chewing change. Find your baby’s age band.

Prep tip
Leeks trap grit between their layers. Slice first, then wash the slices in a bowl of water and lift them out, leaving the grit at the bottom.
Storage
Keeps a week refrigerated. Cooked leek keeps three days and freezes well in soups.
Is leek a choking hazard for babies?
Cooked leek separates into long, slippery ribbons that can bunch in the mouth. Slice finely before cooking and chop again afterwards for younger babies. The dark green tops are tough — use the white and pale green parts.
Whatever you serve, stay within arm’s reach, keep your baby upright in a supportive seat, and never let them eat in a moving car, buggy or carrier. Gagging is loud and normal. Choking is silent.
Is leek a common allergen?
Leek is not one of the nine most common food allergens. Any food can trigger a reaction, though, so offer it on its own the first time and watch for hives, vomiting, swelling or a change in breathing over the next two hours.
Is leek healthy for babies?
Leek carries vitamin K, folate and prebiotic fibres that support gut bacteria. It is milder than onion, which makes it a gentler introduction to allium flavour, and it forms the base of some of the easiest baby-friendly soups.
