Onion for babies
Onion is one of the most common questions and one of the easiest answers: cooked onion is fine from 6 months, and it makes everything else taste better.
When can babies have onion?
From around 6 months, cooked. There is no reason to keep flavour out of a baby's food — the only things to restrict are salt, sugar and honey. A baby raised on bland food is not more likely to eat well later.
How do you serve onion to a baby?
The shape is what makes a food safe, and it changes as your baby’s grip and chewing change. Find your baby’s age band.
-
6–8 months
Finely chopped and softened in a pan as the base of a sauce, dal, mince or soup. Not as a standalone food.
-
9–11 months
Finely chopped cooked onion in mixed dishes.
-
12–18 months
Chopped cooked onion, caramelised onion, in most family dishes.
-
18–24 months
As the family eats it. Raw onion is still sharp for most toddlers.
Prep tip
Softening onion slowly for ten minutes before adding anything else turns it sweet and removes the sharpness babies dislike.
Storage
Store onions somewhere cool and dark, not the fridge. Cut onion keeps two days sealed in the fridge.
Is onion a choking hazard for babies?
Cooked onion is soft but slippery, and the layers can separate into rings that bunch in the mouth. Chop finely rather than slicing into rings. Raw onion is sharp and firm and should wait until well past 12 months.
Whatever you serve, stay within arm’s reach, keep your baby upright in a supportive seat, and never let them eat in a moving car, buggy or carrier. Gagging is loud and normal. Choking is silent.
Is onion a common allergen?
Onion is not one of the nine most common food allergens. Any food can trigger a reaction, though, so offer it on its own the first time and watch for hives, vomiting, swelling or a change in breathing over the next two hours.
Is onion healthy for babies?
Onion carries prebiotic fibres that feed gut bacteria, plus quercetin and vitamin C. Its real value is culinary: onion is the base of most family cooking, and cooking one meal for everyone rather than separate baby food is what makes family eating sustainable.
| Vitamin C | Good source |
|---|---|
| Prebiotic fibre | High |
| Quercetin | High |
| Folate | Some |
| Iron per serving | ~0.2 mg |
Common questions about onion
Can onion upset a baby's stomach?
Occasionally — it is high in fructans, which some babies find gassy. If you notice a pattern, reduce the amount rather than removing it.
Is it fine to season baby food at all?
Yes, with everything except salt, sugar and honey. Herbs, spices, garlic, onion, lemon and pepper are all fine and help a baby accept the family's food later.
