Yellow squash for babies
Yellow summer squash cooks as fast as courgette and tastes slightly sweeter, which sometimes wins over a baby who has started refusing green vegetables.
When can babies have yellow squash?
From around 6 months, cooked soft. Interchangeable with courgette in every recipe.
How do you serve yellow squash to a baby?
The shape is what makes a food safe, and it changes as your baby’s grip and chewing change. Find your baby’s age band.

Prep tip
Like courgette, grated summer squash holds a lot of water — squeeze it out before making fritters.
Storage
Keeps five days refrigerated. Does not freeze well raw; freeze grated and squeezed for bakes.
Is yellow squash a choking hazard for babies?
Cooked summer squash is soft and low risk. Cut lengthways into batons rather than coins. The skin is thin and edible on small squash but worth peeling on large ones.
Whatever you serve, stay within arm’s reach, keep your baby upright in a supportive seat, and never let them eat in a moving car, buggy or carrier. Gagging is loud and normal. Choking is silent.
Is yellow squash a common allergen?
Yellow squash is not one of the nine most common food allergens. Any food can trigger a reaction, though, so offer it on its own the first time and watch for hives, vomiting, swelling or a change in breathing over the next two hours.
Is yellow squash healthy for babies?
Similar to courgette — mostly water, with modest vitamin C and B6. Its usefulness is colour and variety: a baby offered a range of colours early is more likely to accept a range later, and yellow squash is a cheap way to widen the palette.
