Tortilla for babies
A warm tortilla cut into strips is one of the most practical baby foods: soft, foldable, and it carries beans, avocado or shredded meat.
When can babies have tortilla?
From around 6 months, warm and cut into strips. Corn tortillas are gluten-free; flour tortillas are a wheat food.
How do you serve tortilla to a baby?
The shape is what makes a food safe, and it changes as your baby’s grip and chewing change. Find your baby’s age band.
-
6–8 months
Warm a tortilla, cut into finger-width strips, and top thinly with mashed avocado, refried beans or hummus. One strip at a time.
-
9–11 months
Strips, or small folded pieces with a filling.
-
12–18 months
Soft tacos cut into strips, quesadilla fingers, or wraps cut small.
-
18–24 months
Family portions. Tortilla chips still wait.
Prep tip
Warm the tortilla first. A cold tortilla is stiff and cracks; a warm one folds around a filling and stays together.
Storage
Keeps a week refrigerated in the packet. Tortillas freeze well and separate easily when warmed.
Is tortilla a choking hazard for babies?
Soft tortilla can compress into a wad if a baby packs in too much, the same issue as fresh bread. Warm it, cut it into strips rather than large pieces, and offer one strip at a time. Hard taco shells and tortilla chips are brittle and shatter into sharp fragments — not before 4 years.
Whatever you serve, stay within arm’s reach, keep your baby upright in a supportive seat, and never let them eat in a moving car, buggy or carrier. Gagging is loud and normal. Choking is silent.
Is tortilla a common allergen?
Flour tortillas are wheat, one of the nine common allergens. Corn tortillas are not — read the packet, because some 'corn' tortillas contain wheat flour as well.
Is tortilla healthy for babies?
Corn tortillas made from nixtamalised corn — treated with lime — carry more available calcium and niacin than untreated corn, which is a genuine nutritional advantage. Both types are useful mainly as vehicles: a tortilla strip is the easiest way to get mashed beans, avocado or shredded chicken into a baby's hand.
| Carbohydrate | High |
|---|---|
| Calcium (nixtamalised corn) | Good source |
| Iron (often fortified) | Good source |
| Fibre | Some |
| Iron per serving | ~0.5 mg |
