Okra for babies

Okra cooks to a genuinely soft texture very quickly and carries good folate and calcium. The mucilage that puts adults off is not a problem for a baby.

When can babies have okra?

From around 6 months, cooked soft. Okra is a complementary-feeding staple across West Africa, South Asia and the American South.

How do you serve okra to a baby?

The shape is what makes a food safe, and it changes as your baby’s grip and chewing change. Find your baby’s age band.

  1. 6–8 months

Trim the tops, cut lengthways into strips, and sauté or steam until soft — about five minutes. Or cook whole small pods and hand one over.

  2. 9–11 months

Soft pieces for the pincer grasp, or cooked into a stew.

  3. 12–18 months

Sliced cooked okra, in a curry, gumbo or stew.

  4. 18–24 months

Family portions, cooked. Watch the salt in stews.

Prep tip

Roasting or high-heat sautéing reduces the sliminess considerably; boiling and stewing increase it. Either way it is texture, not a problem.

Storage

Keeps three days refrigerated. Frozen okra is widely available and works well.

Is okra a choking hazard for babies?

Choking risk Moderate

Cooked okra is soft and low risk, though whole pods are slippery — cut them lengthways rather than into rounds for the first year. Raw okra is fibrous. The seeds inside are small and soft.

Whatever you serve, stay within arm’s reach, keep your baby upright in a supportive seat, and never let them eat in a moving car, buggy or carrier. Gagging is loud and normal. Choking is silent.

Is okra a common allergen?

Common allergen No

Okra is not one of the nine most common food allergens. Any food can trigger a reaction, though, so offer it on its own the first time and watch for hives, vomiting, swelling or a change in breathing over the next two hours.

Is okra healthy for babies?

Okra is very high in folate and carries useful calcium, vitamin K and fibre. It cooks soft in minutes, which makes it one of the faster vegetables to get onto a tray.

What okra brings
Folate Very high
Vitamin K High
Vitamin C Good source
Calcium Good source
Fibre High

Common questions about okra

How do I stop okra being slimy?

Cook it fast and hot — roast or sauté rather than boil — and cut it as little as possible. The mucilage is released by cutting and moisture.

Is the slime a problem for a baby?

No, and it may even help — it is a soluble fibre. Babies have no preconceptions about texture the way adults do.
