Turkey for babies

Turkey behaves much like chicken: mild, easy to shred, and it dries out if you are not careful. Dark meat carries useful iron and zinc.

When can babies have turkey?

From around 6 months. Turkey thigh in particular is a genuinely useful iron and zinc source, and minced turkey is one of the easiest meats to work into a baby-friendly texture.

How do you serve turkey to a baby?

The shape is what makes a food safe, and it changes as your baby’s grip and chewing change. Find your baby’s age band.

  1. 6–8 months

Minced turkey cooked in a sauce and mixed with mashed vegetable so it clumps, or slow-cooked thigh shredded very finely and moistened.

  2. 9–11 months

Small soft turkey meatballs, or shredded turkey in a thick sauce.

  3. 12–18 months

Meatballs, turkey bolognese, shredded turkey in wraps. Cut any slices across the grain into strips.

  4. 18–24 months

Family portions cut small. Deli turkey is very high in salt — occasional at most.

Prep tip

Minced turkey is dry on its own. Mix it with grated courgette or a spoon of tomato purée before cooking and the texture changes completely.

Storage

Cook to 74 °C / 165 °F. Cooked turkey keeps two days refrigerated and freezes well in sauce.

Is turkey a choking hazard for babies?

Choking risk Moderate

Turkey breast is drier than chicken and turns stringy quickly, which is hard for a baby to break down. Serve it moist — in a sauce, or as minced turkey bound with something soft. Avoid firm bite-sized cubes in the first year.

Whatever you serve, stay within arm’s reach, keep your baby upright in a supportive seat, and never let them eat in a moving car, buggy or carrier. Gagging is loud and normal. Choking is silent.

Is turkey a common allergen?

Common allergen No

Turkey is not one of the nine most common food allergens. Any food can trigger a reaction, though, so offer it on its own the first time and watch for hives, vomiting, swelling or a change in breathing over the next two hours.

Is turkey healthy for babies?

Turkey is high-quality protein with more iron than chicken, especially in the dark meat, plus zinc and selenium. It is very lean, which is a mixed blessing for a baby who needs calorie density — cook it with some fat.

What turkey brings
Protein Very high
Iron (heme, dark meat) Good source
Zinc Good source
Selenium High
Vitamin B6 High

Common questions about turkey

Can babies have deli turkey or turkey slices?

Sparingly and not before 12 months. Processed deli meats are very high in salt and nitrates, and a baby's daily salt limit is under 1 g. Cook your own and slice it instead.

Is turkey better than chicken for babies?

Marginally, on iron and zinc, especially dark meat. Both are good. Whichever you cook more moistly is the better one in practice.
