Tofu for babies
Tofu does two jobs at once: it introduces soy, one of the nine common allergens, and it gives you a soft, high-protein food that cuts into a shape a 6-month-old can hold.
When can babies have tofu?
From around 6 months, as one of your early allergen introductions. Tofu is a particularly easy way to introduce soy because it is bland, soft and easy to portion — far simpler than trying to work soy sauce or edamame into a 6-month-old's diet.
How do you serve tofu to a baby?
The shape is what makes a food safe, and it changes as your baby’s grip and chewing change. Find your baby’s age band.
-
6–8 months
Firm tofu, patted dry, cut into finger-width strips. Serve plain, or roll the strips in ground almond, nutritional yeast or fine breadcrumbs and bake for grip and flavour. Silken tofu can be blended into a purée or a smoothie.
-
9–11 months
Bite-sized cubes of firm tofu, baked or pan-fried without salt until the outside firms up.
-
12–18 months
Cubes in a stir-fry, scrambled tofu, or blended into a sauce. Watch the soy sauce — it is extremely high in salt.
-
18–24 months
Family portions. Keep the seasoning light.
Prep tip
Pat tofu dry and bake or pan-fry the strips briefly. A slightly firmed outside is much easier for a baby to hold than a wet, slippery raw strip.
Storage
Once opened, keep tofu submerged in fresh water in a sealed container, change the water daily, and use within three days.
Is tofu a choking hazard for babies?
Low risk. Firm tofu holds a strip shape but squashes readily; silken tofu is closer to a purée and needs a spoon. The only caution is very firm or pressed tofu, which can be rubbery — buy firm rather than extra-firm for babies.
Whatever you serve, stay within arm’s reach, keep your baby upright in a supportive seat, and never let them eat in a moving car, buggy or carrier. Gagging is loud and normal. Choking is silent.
Is tofu a common allergen?
Soy is one of the nine common allergens, though soy allergy is less common than milk or egg and most children outgrow it. Introduce tofu on its own, at home, earlier in the day, and watch for two hours. Note that soy allergy and cow's milk protein allergy sometimes travel together, so if your baby has a diagnosed milk allergy, check with your pediatrician before introducing soy.
Is tofu healthy for babies?
Tofu is one of the best plant proteins available to a baby, and it carries a genuinely useful amount of iron. Tofu set with calcium sulphate — check the ingredients — is also a strong calcium source, which matters in dairy-free families. Serve it with a vitamin C food to improve iron absorption.
| Protein | High |
|---|---|
| Iron (non-heme) | High |
| Calcium (if set with calcium) | High |
| Magnesium | Good source |
| Iron per serving | ~1.5 mg |
Common questions about tofu
Is soy safe for babies? I have read things about hormones.
The concern comes from isoflavones, plant compounds with a weak oestrogen-like structure. Food amounts of soy — tofu, edamame, soy yogurt — are not associated with hormonal effects in children in the evidence we have, and soy is a staple infant food across much of East Asia. Soy protein infant formula is a separate question worth discussing with your pediatrician.
Firm or silken tofu for a baby?
Firm, if you want something they can hold. Silken is excellent blended into purées, sauces and smoothies but cannot be picked up.
Does tofu need cooking?
It is safe as it comes, but cooking improves the texture and flavour and makes it easier to grip. Baking strips for 20 minutes is worth the effort.
