Tilapia for babies
Tilapia is the mildest fish most people can buy, which makes it a gentle introduction. It is also very lean, so it carries little omega-3.
When can babies have tilapia?
From around 6 months. Tilapia is on the FDA and EPA best-choices list and is among the lowest-mercury fish available.
How do you serve tilapia to a baby?
The shape is what makes a food safe, and it changes as your baby’s grip and chewing change. Find your baby’s age band.
-
6–8 months
Poach or bake with a little liquid until it flakes, check for bones, and serve in soft chunks or mashed into potato or a sauce.
-
9–11 months
Flaked, or in soft fish cakes.
-
12–18 months
Flaked, in fish pie, or as a small portion of fillet.
-
18–24 months
Family portions.
Prep tip
Bake tilapia covered with a splash of water or stock. Uncovered it dries out in minutes and becomes chalky.
Storage
Cook within a day of buying, or cook from frozen. Cooked tilapia keeps two days.
Is tilapia a choking hazard for babies?
Tilapia flakes softly and has few bones, but check anyway. It dries out easily when overcooked, and dry fish is hard for a baby to manage — poach or bake it with moisture.
Whatever you serve, stay within arm’s reach, keep your baby upright in a supportive seat, and never let them eat in a moving car, buggy or carrier. Gagging is loud and normal. Choking is silent.
Is tilapia a common allergen?
Tilapia is fish, one of the nine common allergens.
Is tilapia healthy for babies?
Lean, high-quality protein with good B12 and selenium, and a very mild flavour. Its omega-3 content is low, so it does not replace salmon, sardines or mackerel nutritionally — think of it as an easy first fish or a way to add variety.
| Protein | Very high |
|---|---|
| Vitamin B12 | High |
| Selenium | High |
| Niacin | High |
| Omega-3 | Low |
| Iron per serving | ~0.3 mg |
