When can babies have trout?

From around 6 months. Freshwater trout is on the FDA and EPA best-choices list, meaning it is low enough in mercury for one to two servings a week.

How do you serve trout to a baby?

The shape is what makes a food safe, and it changes as your baby’s grip and chewing change. Find your baby’s age band.

  1. 6–8 months

Bake or poach until it flakes, check meticulously for pin bones, and serve in soft chunks or mashed into potato.

  2. 9–11 months

Flaked, bones checked, or in fish cakes.

  3. 12–18 months

Flaked, in pasta, or a small portion of fillet.

  4. 18–24 months

    Family portions.

Prep tip

Trout has more pin bones than salmon. Run your fingertip along the fillet before cooking and pull any you feel with tweezers.

Storage

Cook within a day of buying. Cooked trout keeps two days refrigerated.

Is trout a choking hazard for babies?

Choking risk Moderate

Trout flakes softly. The risk is pin bones, which are numerous in trout — run your fingers over every flake. Remove the skin for babies.

Whatever you serve, stay within arm’s reach, keep your baby upright in a supportive seat, and never let them eat in a moving car, buggy or carrier. Gagging is loud and normal. Choking is silent.

Is trout a common allergen?

Common allergen Yes

Trout is fish, one of the nine common allergens. Different fish species carry different proteins, so tolerating salmon does not guarantee tolerating trout — though it makes a reaction less likely.

Is trout healthy for babies?

Trout delivers DHA, vitamin D and B12 at levels close to salmon, with a milder taste. It is often cheaper than salmon and widely farmed, which keeps it available year-round.
