Swiss chard for babies
Chard is a striking green with a lot of vitamin K and magnesium. Like spinach it is high in oxalates, so rotate it rather than relying on it.
When can babies have swiss chard?
From around 6 months, cooked soft and finely chopped.
How do you serve swiss chard to a baby?
The shape is what makes a food safe, and it changes as your baby’s grip and chewing change. Find your baby’s age band.
-
6–8 months
Strip leaves from stems, chop both finely, cook until soft — stems first — and mix into a purée, dal or sauce.
-
9–11 months
Finely chopped cooked chard in fritters, omelettes or pasta.
-
12–18 months
Chopped cooked chard as a side or in a bake.
-
18–24 months
Family portions, cooked.
Prep tip
The stems are edible and take about four minutes longer than the leaves. Chop them small and start them first.
Storage
Keeps four days refrigerated. Cooked chopped chard freezes in portions.
Is swiss chard a choking hazard for babies?
Chard leaves are large and slippery when cooked and can bunch in the mouth. Separate the stems, cook both until soft, and chop finely for the first year.
Whatever you serve, stay within arm’s reach, keep your baby upright in a supportive seat, and never let them eat in a moving car, buggy or carrier. Gagging is loud and normal. Choking is silent.
Is swiss chard a common allergen?
Swiss chard is not one of the nine most common food allergens. Any food can trigger a reaction, though, so offer it on its own the first time and watch for hives, vomiting, swelling or a change in breathing over the next two hours.
Is swiss chard healthy for babies?
Chard is exceptionally high in vitamin K and carries good magnesium, vitamin A and iron. Its oxalate content is similar to spinach, which limits how much of its calcium and iron is absorbed — pair it with vitamin C and alternate it with kale and bok choy rather than serving it daily.
| Vitamin K | Extremely high |
|---|---|
| Vitamin A | Very high |
| Magnesium | High |
| Vitamin C | Good source |
| Iron (non-heme) | Good source |
| Iron per serving | ~0.9 mg |
Common questions about swiss chard
Is chard as good as kale?
For vitamin K and magnesium, yes. For calcium and iron absorption, kale is better because chard is high in oxalates. Rotate both.
Can babies eat the coloured stems?
Yes, chopped small and cooked soft. They take a little longer than the leaves.
