Pumpkin seeds for babies
Pumpkin seeds carry more iron and zinc than almost any other seed. Whole they are a choking hazard, so grind them or use the butter.
When can babies have pumpkin seeds?
From around 6 months, ground or as a thinned butter. Whole seeds from around 4 years.
How do you serve pumpkin seeds to a baby?
The shape is what makes a food safe, and it changes as your baby’s grip and chewing change. Find your baby’s age band.

Prep tip
Ground pumpkin seed plus a vitamin C fruit — strawberry, kiwi, mango — in the same bowl is one of the most efficient plant-iron combinations you can put together.
Storage
Refrigerate after opening. Ground seed goes rancid quickly — grind as needed.
Is pumpkin seeds a choking hazard for babies?
Whole pumpkin seeds are firm, flat and slippery, and they are a choking hazard for young children — they should wait until around 4 years. Ground into a meal or made into a butter they are perfectly safe. Butter must be thinned like any seed butter.
Whatever you serve, stay within arm’s reach, keep your baby upright in a supportive seat, and never let them eat in a moving car, buggy or carrier. Gagging is loud and normal. Choking is silent.
Is pumpkin seeds a common allergen?
Pumpkin seed is not one of the nine common allergens. Reactions are uncommon but possible; introduce it on its own.
Is pumpkin seeds healthy for babies?
Pumpkin seeds are among the best plant sources of both iron and zinc — the two minerals that become limiting after 6 months — and they are exceptionally high in magnesium. Ground into porridge or yogurt with a vitamin C fruit alongside, they make a real contribution in a vegetarian diet.
| Iron (non-heme) | Very high |
|---|---|
| Zinc | Very high |
| Magnesium | Extremely high |
| Protein | High |
| Healthy fats | High |
| Iron per serving | ~1.5 mg |
Common questions about pumpkin seeds
When can my child eat whole pumpkin seeds?
Around 4 years. They are firm, flat and slippery — a shape that is hard to chew and easy to inhale. Ground is fine from 6 months.
Are pumpkin seeds really that high in iron?
Yes — among the highest of any plant food by weight. It is non-heme iron, so pair it with vitamin C to get the most out of it.
