Plantain for babies
Plantain looks like a banana and behaves like a potato. It must be cooked, and boiled or baked rather than fried for a baby.
When can babies have plantain?
From around 6 months, cooked until soft. Plantain is a complementary-feeding staple across West Africa, the Caribbean and Latin America and is a genuinely good early food.
How do you serve plantain to a baby?
The shape is what makes a food safe, and it changes as your baby’s grip and chewing change. Find your baby’s age band.
-
6–8 months
Peel a ripe (yellow-black) plantain, cut into finger-length strips, and bake or boil until completely soft. Mash if it is still firm.
-
9–11 months
Soft cooked pieces for the pincer grasp, or mashed.
-
12–18 months
Baked plantain, mashed plantain, or in a stew. Avoid deep-fried tostones for now — they are hard and salty.
-
18–24 months
Family portions, cooked. Fried plantain occasionally.
Prep tip
Bake rather than fry. A ripe plantain baked in its skin at 200 °C for 25 minutes goes soft and sweet with no added fat.
Storage
Plantains ripen on the counter over one to two weeks; black skin means fully ripe, not spoiled. Cooked plantain keeps three days refrigerated.
Is plantain a choking hazard for babies?
Cooked ripe plantain is soft and low risk. Raw plantain is hard and starchy and should never be given. Green plantain cooks firmer than ripe; cook it longer or choose a riper one for a baby.
Whatever you serve, stay within arm’s reach, keep your baby upright in a supportive seat, and never let them eat in a moving car, buggy or carrier. Gagging is loud and normal. Choking is silent.
Is plantain a common allergen?
Plantain is not one of the nine most common food allergens. Any food can trigger a reaction, though, so offer it on its own the first time and watch for hives, vomiting, swelling or a change in breathing over the next two hours.
Is plantain healthy for babies?
Plantain is more calorie-dense than banana and carries substantially more vitamin A and C, plus a large amount of potassium and B6. As a starchy staple it can anchor a meal in a way fruit cannot.
| Potassium | Very high |
|---|---|
| Vitamin A | High |
| Vitamin C | High |
| Vitamin B6 | High |
| Fibre | Good source |
| Iron per serving | ~0.4 mg |
Common questions about plantain
Can I give my baby plantain raw like a banana?
No. Plantain is starchy and hard raw, even when ripe, and needs cooking to be digestible and safe.
Green or ripe plantain for a baby?
Ripe, which is yellow with black patches. Green plantain is much starchier and cooks firmer — closer to a potato than a fruit.
