Scallops for babies
Scallops are the most tender shellfish and the easiest for a baby to chew — provided they are cooked briefly. Overcooked, they turn to rubber.
When can babies have scallops?
From around 6 months, thoroughly cooked and finely chopped. Scallops are a mollusc and low in mercury.
How do you serve scallops to a baby?
The shape is what makes a food safe, and it changes as your baby’s grip and chewing change. Find your baby’s age band.
-
6–8 months
Cook briefly until just opaque, then chop very finely and mix into rice, pasta or a sauce.
-
9–11 months
Finely chopped scallop in a mixed dish.
-
12–18 months
Chopped scallop in pasta or rice.
-
18–24 months
Small pieces. Family portions.
Prep tip
Two minutes a side at most. A scallop cooked until firm is rubber; one cooked until just opaque is tender enough for a baby to manage.
Storage
Cook the day you buy them. Cooked scallop keeps one day refrigerated.
Is scallops a choking hazard for babies?
Properly cooked scallops are tender; overcooked ones are rubbery and hard to break down. Chop them finely for the first year, and remove the tough side muscle if it is still attached.
Whatever you serve, stay within arm’s reach, keep your baby upright in a supportive seat, and never let them eat in a moving car, buggy or carrier. Gagging is loud and normal. Choking is silent.
Is scallops a common allergen?
Scallops are molluscs, a distinct allergen group from crustaceans like shrimp and crab. Introduce separately from shrimp, on its own, with two hours of watching.
Is scallops healthy for babies?
High-quality protein with strong B12, selenium and zinc. Their sweet flavour and tender texture make them one of the easier shellfish for a baby, and they cook in two minutes.
| Protein | Very high |
|---|---|
| Vitamin B12 | Very high |
| Selenium | Very high |
| Zinc | Good source |
| Phosphorus | High |
| Iron per serving | ~0.3 mg |
Common questions about scallops
Are scallops safe for babies?
Cooked through, from a reputable source, chopped fine — yes. They are low in mercury and among the more tender shellfish.
Is a scallop allergy the same as a prawn allergy?
No. Molluscs and crustaceans are separate groups. Some people react to both, many react to only one.
